Set on the tranquil edge of Kandima’s inland lake, KULA Art Studio is the creative heart of the resort — a peaceful, light-filled space where guests can slow down and make something with their hands. It’s led by Kandima’s resident artist, whose own practice spans painting, mural work, typography, videography, and even poetry, and who welcomes guests into the studio for both structured classes and open, drop-in creative time.
The Experience
Sessions run as solo lessons or small groups, covering painting and craft techniques suited to complete beginners and confident hobbyists alike. Children and adults are both welcome, so it works equally well as a rainy-afternoon activity for the family or a quiet solo escape. Beyond individual classes, the resident artist also leads mural collaborations around the resort and curates Kandima’s annual KULA Art Festival, giving guests a chance to see — and sometimes contribute to — a wider island-wide art programme during their stay.
More Than a Studio
KULA — meaning “colours” in Dhivehi — is also the name of Kandima’s community art initiative. For every guest who stays at the resort, a contribution goes into the KULA Art Fund, and 30% of the sale price of any artwork bought from the studio is donated to the same fund, which supports local education, arts, and music projects across the Maldives. Every class booked or piece purchased in the studio quietly supports that wider community work.
